11/13: Medical Care for Sex Workers at the Feminist Transformations Conference

Conference Details:

Feminist Transformations will explore how we as feminists and women’s studies scholars are transforming the academy – even as it experiences its own transformation – and how it has also transformed us; how we understand and assess the limitations and inroads we have made in transforming our relationship to traditional disciplines; and how we continue the struggle to make social justice a core value of this society.

The conference seeks to explore how have we transformed how we think about social change, social movements, knowledge production and agency and how much have these things transformed us? The conference also seeks to examine and explore how women’s studies as a field (and feminist theorizing) is transformed when we place the ideas and experiences of intersectionality and transnationalism at the center.

Date: 11/13

Start Time: 12:15-1:30 pm

Title:  Medical Care for Sex Workers

Description:

Sex workers frequently experience social stigma and marginalization that impacts their ability to receive (and sometimes to seek out) health care. As a consequence, their health problems have the potential to remain unrecognized and undiagnosed. This paper highlights some of the key reasons for sex workers’ avoidance of health professionals while simultaneously providing insight into how doctors can better provide care for this underserved population. Speaker Four (Megan Andelloux) will identify and discuss the health risks that accompany various forms of sex work and explore methods health care providers can employ to approach this population in a compassionate and holistic manner.

Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Cost: $110.00-230.00 Sliding scale fee.  Registered attendees only.  To register for this conference, please visit the National Women’s Study Association
